With her renowned,
brilliant use of voice as instrument, jazz singer Kellye Gray
has entertained dignitaries and heads-of-state, and shared stages with an
impressive constellation of international jazz, blues and R&B stars from
Nancy Wilson and Ray Charles to Etta James. Born in Dallas, raised by jazz
loving parents, her ‘big ole voice’ was saturated by the deep blues and soul
singers from her native south along with the cool hot jazz played on the family
turntable. But, being a child of the fifties she loved MoTown, R&B and Rock
and Roll. An accidental leap of jazz faith led her to the unique jazz voice she
is today. The San Francisco Examiner calls her “a musically most imaginative tour de force” And JazzTimes exploded, calling her ” an impressive, indeed
frighteningly vast talent.”
Her career has
taken her across the globe from Austin,Texas to the Lincoln Center, Yoshi’s in San Francisco, Hollywood's Cinegrille and
New Orleans’s oldest jazz room Snug Harbor to the jazz caves of Paris and the
mountains of Slovakia. Her many festival performances include Spoleto
Festival, Stanford Jazz Festival, Houston International Festival, Viva Musica!, Jazz and Blues Heritage Festival and San
Francisco Jazz Festival.
Beyond the music,
Gray is known for her vivacious, comic personality. Years of training as an actress and comedian include a stint at the
famed Comedy Workshop where she improvised onstage with troupe members Sam Kinison and
